Generational soul ties
Soul ties can be passed on through the generations. The way to break this off is to pray over what happened in the past with our lineage and to pray by focusing on some specific areas.
Children can receive harmful soul ties such as worry and fear from their parents. Just as physical and emotional attributes are passed down through the generations, spiritual attributes can also be passed down.
“Why don’t we focus on breaking off the generational soul ties that you mentioned?” Julie explained that there are generational soul ties that can be passed on and they can only be broken through the power of prayer and fasting.
“Let’s wait on the Holy Spirit to lead us and reveal to us what needs to be broken. Let’s see if there’s anything that’s been passed on through the generations.”
Through this practice of listening to Sarah share about her family history, they were able to pray over several specific areas to help Sarah break off her generational soul ties.
Whenever possible, pray over this with someone who is well trained and versed in this area. Be careful not to attribute every negative situation in your life to generational sins.

Soul ties within the church
If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. - 1 Corinthians 12:26
When something happens to someone within a church, everyone can be affected by it. That’s because the church has a community soul tie that’s shared by everyone.
Soul ties can also be formed when people serve together. The amount of time spent planning, meeting, praying and sharing life will cause soul ties to be formed. Sometimes the enemy will attack these soul ties and bring about disunity and disagreement within the church.
He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. – Ephesians 4:16
Amy and Jane served together in a church for two years but had a soul tie that became harmful due to a disagreement. Because they did not deal with the soul tie, the enemy used this to bring harm and damage to the ministry and the church.
Their first goal is to be able to reconcile. Reconciliation and unity is what defeats the enemy’s work in this situation.
However, there are times when these harmful soul ties can only be broken off by cutting off ties with the person, place or event. That means the best way for them to move forward is to break off the relationship when there no other options left. This will then allow them time and space to heal before they can be reconciled.
If you’re in the middle of a harmful soul tie, prayerfully consider breaking off that relationship if that’s the right thing to do. Not all broken relationships can be fixed or mended.
There are times when the right thing to do is to break it off so that healing can take place before reconciliation.
Soul ties with places
Soul ties can also happen when we give of our hearts to things, places or events.
For example, you can form a soul tie after going on a mission trip by leaving a part of your heart there. This will cause you to constantly fantasize about going back to the place.
When you allow this kind of soul tie to have control over your life, it will eventually lead to a sense of sadness and dissatisfaction with your current situation.
This kind of soul tie can also result in a loss of intimacy with God. When your heart is constantly struggling with your current situation, you will end up struggling in your relationship with God instead of being guided by His voice.
It’s also important to know the difference between having a good kind of discontent and a bad kind of discontent. Discontentment is good when it leads us toward God and His kingdom purpose. It’s bad when it affects us in a negative and causes us to drift further away from God and from serving Him.
The way to deal with this soul tie is to spend time serving where you’re at instead of daydreaming about going somewhere else. Begin by serving at a local church and wait for God to lead and guide you to your next step.
I mention local church because it’s usually the best way for people to serve. For some of us, this might not be an option or we might have a preference to serve elsewhere. Keep focusing on serving those right next to you and using the talents that you already have in your hands.
When it’s time for you to move forward, He will make it clear to you. Focus on your heart first and deal with issues such as discontentment.
Hobbies
Sports is one example where people can have soul ties with their team to an extent that their daily sense of joy and wellbeing is determined by how well their team perform.
When our lives are driven by a sports team that it begins to define our lives, we’ve created a soul tie with the hobby.
This soul tie can be broken when we reflect and focus on what matters most.
Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. - Colossians 3:2
Keep your focus on things that will last for eternity instead of things that will only last for a moment. Ask yourself what you can give up in order to focus on the eternal. Sometimes that can even mean friendships, job promotions, ministry opportunities or financial gain.
There’s so much noise around us that draws our attention away from heaven each day. But the more you give up on these temporal things for the sake of eternity, the more you will live with a sense of purpose and true joy each day.
We can’t serve well when our soul is damaged
Too many of us are trying to serve and make a difference in the world when our soul is still broken and damaged. We struggle with issues of acceptance, identity and belonging while trying to help others. It’s a lot harder to help others when we’re not healed ourselves from issues such as soul ties.
God wants us to be healed from the inside out so that we can lead others to receive the inner healing and freedom that only Jesus can give. It does not mean we have to become flawless or live a life without pain.
But when we receive healing, we’re then able to help others discover the same kind of freedom and healing that comes from knowing Jesus.
Take care of your soul more than anything else. Nothing can be more important than taking care of your soul. This is more important than church or ministry. If your soul is broken, it will show up in your ministry, family life and work life.
You are fully responsible for this task. No one else can do it for you.
